Since then a Pinot Grigio was added in late 2006, a Lagrein in mid-2007 and a sparkling Blanc de Noir ( Extra Sec style) in October 2008. All Point Leo Road Vineyard wines are made from single vineyard grapes grown at the Point Leo Road, Red Hill South property. They are therefore, site specific allowing the character of the rich red soils and the vineyard’s unique microclimate to be reflected in the individuality of the wines. Our winemakers take a minimalist intervention approach which means that quality fruit becomes quality wine. The long and extended autumn ripening of the fruit during the 2004 season meant an intensity of flavours resulting in excellent wine. By comparison, the 2008 harvest took place three weeks earlier than usual with soaring temperatures and no rainfall. The 2007 (“ the severe drought year”) and 2008 wines will be most interesting to say the least and pose challenges for winemakers but promise to be of excellent quality. The 2009 vintage,” the season from hell”, showed the effect of low rainfall, reduced fruit-set due to strong cold winds, cool weather during veraison, followed by extreme heat and no rain at all during summer! Cool weather and some rain at the start of autumn slowed ripening and provided relief for weary vines and workers alike! The end result was low yields but little damage, thanks to dense canopies and the site orientation of our vineyard. We consider ourselves fortunate given outcomes for other fruit growers across the national spectrum. Interestingly, the 2009 vintage promises to be excellent. It is important to remember that boutique wines will always reflect the seasons: be they wet and miserable, mellow and warm or dry and really hot. This is what makes boutique wines so interesting- it should never be claimed nor should it be expected that the next season will be the same as the one before! This has the advantage of both grapegrower and winemaker determining the style to be made without a “one size fits all “mentality – a criticism often levelled at larger producers. Point Leo Road Vineyard wines are available at select premium wine stores and by mail order from our web-site. They are reasonably priced following our philosophy that great wine need not be expensive. We are proud of our products! We hope you try them and enjoy! |
The first wines to be released under the Point Leo Road label were the 2004 Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. A Pinot Noir Rose was released at the end of September 2005. A sparkling Pinot Noir Chardonnay ( in a Brut style) followed just prior to Christmas, 2005.
